President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this year. Instead, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation, as announced by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s special adviser on information and strategy.
Following Tinubu’s recent return from diplomatic trips to China and the United Kingdom, his decision to skip the assembly is reportedly tied to prioritizing urgent domestic challenges, including the aftermath of the devastating floods that hit the country.
At the UNGA, Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national address and participate in key side events and bilateral discussions. The General Debate, themed “Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for All Generations”, will take place from September 24 to 28, 2024.
