Annette O’Toole is an American actress, dancer, and singer. She is best known for her roles as Lana Lang in the Superman film series. As well as her role as Millie Kentner in the film Cat People.   She has also appeared in a number of television shows. Including One Tree Hill, Smallville, and Supernatural.

Early Life and Career

Annette O’Toole is an American actress, dancer, and singer. She is best known for her roles as Lana Lang in Superman III (1983), Catwoman in Supergirl (1984), and Martha Kent in Smallville (2001–2011).

O’Toole was born on April 1, 1952, in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Katherine (née Dickson) and William Westley O’Toole. She was raised in a strict Southern Baptist household. She began her acting career in regional theater in Houston.

O’Toole made her film debut in Michael Ritchie’s Smile (1975). She subsequently appeared in a number of films throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including One of Our Own (1977). The Big Town (1987), and Cat People (1982).

In 1983, O’Toole starred as Lana Lang in Superman III. She reprised the role in the 1984 spin-off film Supergirl. In 2001, she began appearing as Martha Kent, the adoptive mother of Clark Kent/Superman, in the television series Smallville. She appeared in over 100 episodes of the series, until it ended in 2011.

O’Toole has been married to actor Michael McKean since 1999. They have two daughters.

O’Toole began her career as a dancer, appearing in the original Broadway productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Jesus Christ Superstar. She made her film debut in the 1971 film The Beguiled, and her television debut in the 1972 television movie The Legend of Lizzie Borden. She has since appeared in numerous film and television roles.

O’Toole is married to actor Michael McKean, with whom she has two daughters.

In her free time, O’Toole enjoys gardening and cooking.

Legacy

When Annette O’Toole was cast as Martha Kent in “Smallville.” She became the first actress to play the role of Superman’s adoptive mother in live-action. In the show, she was a loving and supportive mother to her son. Clark, as he grew up and began to discover his powers.

O’Toole’s portrayal of Martha Kent was widely praised by fans and critics alike, and she quickly became a fan-favorite. Her portrayal of the character was so popular that she was even asked to reprise the role in the sequel series, “Supergirl”.

While she may not have been the first actress to play Martha Kent. Annette O’Toole will always be remembered as the definitive Martha Kent for her portrayal of the character on “Smallville”.
